History
It was born in the American South in the 18th century: the earliest known mentions date from 1770, in Virginia, and by 1784 it was already appearing as a medical prescription for stomach ailments. A description from 1793 mentions rum, and bourbon versions only overtook gin versions in the 20th century. Since 1938 it has been promoted by the Churchill Downs racetrack as the drink of the Kentucky Derby.
