History
The formula of spirit, sugar, water and bitters matches the oldest definition of "cocktail", published in 1806. The name appeared around 1880, when customers began ordering their cocktail the "old-fashioned" way, without the liqueurs that had come into vogue; the oldest known recipe under that name is by Theodore Proulx of Chicago, from 1888. The story that it was invented at the Pendennis Club in Louisville in 1881 is treated as a myth by the historian David Wondrich.
