Official spec
- Cognacor brandy30 ml
- Gin30 ml
- Lime juice15 ml
- Angostura bitters2 dashes
- Ginger beer to top
Method
Shake all ingredients except the ginger beer with ice in a shaker. Pour unstrained into a collins glass (or the original Suffering Bastard mug) and top with ginger beer.
Garnish
Mint sprig and, if you like, an orange wheel.
History
Created in 1942 by bartender Joe Scialom at Shepheard's Hotel in Cairo, as a hangover cure for Allied troops in World War II. The original handwritten recipe, kept by Scialom's daughter, called for brandy; it is said, without proof, that a telegram once ordered gallons of the drink for the front line.
