The story
As the story goes, the name comes from the custom of serving the drink with cloves, the "rusty nails".
History
The mix of Scotch and Drambuie appeared in 1937 under the name B.I.F., short for the British Industries Fair, credited to F. Benniman. Over the following decades it went around under various names, such as D&S, Little Club No. 1, Mig-21 and Knucklehead. The current name took hold in the early 1960s, associated with the 21 Club in Manhattan and the Rat Pack, and was endorsed in 1963 by Gina MacKinnon, chairwoman of Drambuie, in the New York Times.
