History

It is named after the French 75 mm field gun, model 1897. It appeared in 1922 as the "75" in the books of Harry MacElhone and Robert Vermeire; MacElhone's version called for calvados, gin, grenadine and absinthe. The current formula, with gin, lemon, sugar and champagne, came out in 1927 in the book Here's How and was popularized by The Savoy Cocktail Book of 1930.
