The story
Legend has it that it was created at Madonna's request. What really made it famous was the series Sex and the City.
History
The origin is disputed: bartender Neal Murray says he created it in 1975 in Minneapolis, and historian Gary Regan credits the original creation to Cheryl Cook of the Strand in South Beach. The internationally recognized version is attributed to Toby Cecchini and Melissa Huffsmith-Roth, in 1989, at The Odeon in Manhattan. In the 1990s, Dale DeGroff popularized the use of citron vodka, and the series Sex and the City spread the drink's fame.
