History
According to the most often told version, it was born in Florence around 1919, at Caffè Casoni, when Count Camillo Negroni asked the bartender Fosco Scarselli to strengthen his Americano by swapping the soda water for gin. The oldest known equal-parts recipe appears in a French book from 1929, under the name "Campari Mixte". In 1947, Orson Welles summed up the drink like this: the bitters are good for the liver, the gin is bad for you, and the two balance each other.
