Formerly known as blanc-cassis, it took the name of Félix Kir, mayor of Dijon, in Burgundy, who after World War II served the mix at receptions for visiting delegations to promote the region's white wine and crème de cassis. With champagne in place of the white wine, it becomes a Kir Royal.
